Now that you have your business processes up and running, your bookkeeping has been automated, your clients and sales info are all on your computer, you must takes precautions to ensure that you are protected.
Protected from what? Fire, flood, theft, hardware failure, virus attacks, dumb users (OK, let’s face it. Most data is lost due to operator error.) Bottom line, your business must be able to survive a disaster. The good news is, with a bit of planning, you can be back in business very quickly even if the worst should happen.
How? Because you have a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP), and you are following it. A disaster recovery plan is an actual document that describes in great detail what you will do in specific cases of failure. The DRP not only describes what to do to recover from a disaster, but contains the instructions on how to perform your daily operations in a way that the plan can be utilized. For instance, if the plan calls for utilizing backup data, it will include the steps for creating nightly backups of your data and where to store it once it is backed up.
